Velta Construction, working on behalf of FCC, has embarked on a series of vital infrastructure works as part of the Welsh Government’s £590 million project to dual the A465 between Dowlais Top and Hirwaun. These improvements will enhance the region’s road network, significantly enhance safety, and bring economic prosperity to the communities along the Heads of the Valleys.
Following the successful completion of water network upgrades on this stretch of the A465 for Dŵr Cymru/Welsh Water earlier this year, Velta has now started work to deliver various critical elements on the new route for main contractor FCC.
Works started this week on the installation surface water drainage at the intersection of A465 and A470. The new 1km-long drainage network will bolster the road’s ability to handle surface water effectively, reducing the risk of flooding and ensuring safer and more reliable travel conditions.
Velta is also starting construction of the Gurnos Road Junction, ensuring seamless connectivity along this critical route. The junction works include the implementation of new drainage systems, extensive earthworks, the relocation of bus stops, full road reconstruction, and surfacing works. In addition, Velta is actively upgrading active travel routes, providing shared footpaths and cycle paths in close collaboration with the dedicated team from Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council.
These works will enhance community connectivity and support the principles in the Well-being of Future Generations Act (Wales) 2015, directly contributing towards the Act’s goals of a Healthier Wales and a Wales of Cohesive Communities.
