GRAND UNION CANAL WATER LEVEL MONITORING

Velta worked with Bridge Civil Engineering through their Canal and River Trust Framework to install equipment to monitor water levels on the Grand Union Canal in Watford.

The new water level sensor was located on a towpath with limited access. To overcome this challenge, we selected the smallest possible plant to safely undertake the works and agreed suitable pedestrian and cyclist diversions with the Canal and River Trust to keep towpath users safe.

It was not possible for delivery vehicles to access the worksite. As an example of our innovative approach, we pre-cast the concrete base in our yard and transported it to site using an excavator in accordance with our lifting plans.

Doing this not only removed the need for timber shuttering and wet concrete to be transported to the worksite but also eliminated the risk of watercourse pollution by wet concrete, minimised waste on site and enhanced quality control through factory-condition production.

A main fibre supply for Sky TV was located in the towpath. We safely located and protected it at all times during our works to prevent damage.

On completion of the works, all verges and towpath surfaces were reinstated.
