Abercastle Road Stabilisation

Velta was appointed to deliver road stabilisation works at Abercastle Harbour, a popular destination for residents and visitors. The single-track access road had become unstable due to ongoing erosion along the streamside embankment, threatening public safety and community access.

We constructed a 50m-long, 3m-high gabion basket retaining wall, using locally sourced stone to stabilise the carriageway. A key challenge was the proximity to the watercourse, requiring a temporary stream diversion under Ordinary Watercourse Consent. We designed and managed the temporary works and diversion to prevent environmental impact while maintaining access throughout.

The works were completed on time, within budget, and with no environmental incidents or service strikes, ensuring long-term resilience for this vital route.
